ABOUT
I'm a mom, a wife and someone who suffered a major health crisis...
Like many people, in my youth I didn’t take very good care of my health. I had had a sequence of difficult relationships and decided to make a big move to a different city in effort to move on.
But, relocating was harder than I thought. I was away from those I loved, and struggling without a support system. The choices I made resulted in me finding myself in so many stressful situations - I was working full time on my Masters degree and working multiple jobs on the side to make ends meet.
Maybe it was a compounding of life's traumas, the lack of sleep and my eating habits that triggered my illness. At this point everything in my life was taking a massive toll on my physical, mental and emotional health.
I was living on crap and adrenaline.
It was about a year after finally completing my Master’s program and working at a steady job in my field that my symptoms began. Unfortunately for me, on the surface my symptoms were hard to pinpoint. They were those of high stress: feeling overheated, sweating, heart palpitations, shaky hands and acid reflux. I got misdiagnosed TWICE and was given acid reflux meds, which obviously didn’t help with everything I was experiencing.
Things were getting worse quickly. It got to the point where I was so overheated and sweaty that I would have to take a shower after my shower. My heart rate was so high that it would shake the bed at night. I could not sleep at all for the life of me. My symptoms fed my stress, and my stress fed my symptoms. It was a vicious cycle. I lost twenty pounds in two months while eating more than I ever had before; I lost at least half the hair on my head; and it got to the point where my hands were shaking so bad that I couldn’t sign my own name.
This coudn't just be acid reflux. Something was really wrong.
Around this time I bumped in to a former boss who pointed out a goitre - a large lump - that had formed in my throat. He told me that his wife had just experience the same thing, and this had to be thyroid issue. (At this point in my life I had no idea what the thyroid was, and what it did in the body.) He urged me to visit my doctor again, right away!
This is how I was finally diagnosed with Graves’ disease – an autoimmune disorder that affects the thyroid and causes it to be hyperactive, in my case, extremely hyperactive. Given the severity of my situation, surgery was the only option. But to prepare for the surgery, I had to be put on some very strong meds to slow down my thyroid. …Oh, how I wish I knew then what I know now! Hindsight is always 20/20, isn’t it?
The surgery proceeded and before waking up in the recovery room, I felt the presence of God all around me. I felt a feeling of unequivocal love and peace. This might sound kookie, and you don’t have to believe me, but it’s what I experienced. In the weeks and months that followed, I realized the significance of that moment. It was a miracle: God was giving me a second chance at life, and I had to grab it with both hands. I had to change my lifestyle … completely.
Gradually, I switched my diet to eating whole organic foods as much as possible, and only use natural supplements and holistic remedies to maintain a healthy immune system, and for healing when needed. I’ve switched out my personal care products and toxic home cleaning products to ones that are as natural as possible with the fewest ingredients possible. I don’t allow any synthetic substances in my body, on my skin and hair or in my home. This means no synthetic or processed foods, and no synthetic medicines or medical products. I exercise, practice meditation and prayer to maintain a strong body-mind-spirit connection. Although, I do stumble and give in to cravings sometimes, I am determined to live a natural, healthy lifestyle as much as possible.
